While sculpting, I often delve into self-reflection, contemplating life and striving to understand the experiences and emotions hidden behind each person’s words, actions, thoughts, and perspectives. I firmly believe that even behind misguided decisions or hurtful words stands a human being who, like billions of others, simply longs to love and be loved. Sometimes I succeed in seeing this truth… but how I wish I could see it always.
This sculpture is fired in a black ceramics kiln, with one part (terracotta) additionally fired in an electric kiln.
Black ceramics, one of the oldest forms of clay firing, has been known since Neolithic times but is now a dying art. The process involves slowly raising the temperature of a kiln buried in the ground to extract moisture before adding firewood to start the fuming process. As the clay absorbs smoke and fines, its pores close, resulting in a unique and unrepeatable black finish. This process takes days and is subject to the unpredictable elements of nature, making each creation a one-of-a-kind piece.
Please note that the colors in the pictures may appear slightly different in person due to variations in lighting when the photos were taken.
